On his inauguration day in office, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “transform” the metropolis, declaring “a different age” and an ambitious commencement to his administration.

An Unprecedented Mayor

The 34-year-old democratic socialist, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, has become the city's first mayor born in Africa. He also made history by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Islamic holy text.

“A moment like this seldom arrives and rarer still is it that the citizens whose hands are upon the controls for transformation,” Mamdani remarked.

Mamdani openly embraced his political ideology. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will govern as one. I will not forsake my principles for worry of being called radical,” he proclaimed to rapturous applause.

The inauguration was a two-part event, starting with a late-night oath-taking in a disused subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's ascent as a victory over political establishments.

A Sweeping Blueprint

Mamdani now undertakes one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a platform including:

• Subsidized daycare
• Fare-free public buses
• A cap on rents for approximately 1 million households
• A trial program of municipally-operated grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion expense of these services may prove difficult to finance. Mamdani has vowed to increase levies for the city's top earners and corporations. However, as a municipality subject to the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Navigating External Challenges

The new mayor also faces concern from some Jewish New Yorkers alarmed by his past criticisms regarding Israel. Tensions were revealed during the transition when a appointments director stepped down over offensive past tweets.

Mamdani has moved to address these tensions by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, avoiding the appearance of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “socialist” and warned of withholding federal funding. Despite this, a prior encounter between the two was described as unexpectedly productive.

The Fundamental Tests of Leadership

Ultimately, New York mayors are evaluated by their success in delivering essential functions: sanitation, curbing the rat infestation, fixing roadways, and making sure reliable subway operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his team's anti-crime efforts, pointing to record low numbers of murders and shootings in 2025, with murders reported.

As his work begins, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Astoria apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual warning about a supposed resident spirit in the home, which allegedly only troubles those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his remarks with a direct declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
