A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the pace and execution of the country's key government projects.
The crash occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a line built to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We are going to meticulously determine the reasons behind this incident,” affirmed the head of state.
The leader reported that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The official noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Flagship Project of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the immediate past president, whose presidency concluded the previous year. This venture was intimately linked to his leadership's economic goals for the southern region.
Another massive train initiative from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to revitalize the economy of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Safety Concerns
The construction of both railway systems was overseen by the army, marking a notable growth of its duties in civilian projects. They were built at an accelerated rate, defying expectations to be at least partly launched before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had concurrently fueled significant questions over safety standards.
- Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This involves an prior accident this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had several non-lethal derailments.
Appeals for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the disaster, the chief of a major opposition party called for an urgent pause in the development and management of all similar projects.
This pause was requested until the completion of a thorough technical review. The party emphasized that the loss of life "calls for swift accountability."
In reply, the president maintained that the train had been running in total accordance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the development and operation of these vital undertakings.
